PAINT PUZZLE MURAL PACKS

Paint Puzzles are an at-home mural pack inspired by nature, and designed for fun.

They are a puzzle, a mural, and a collaborative art project all in one.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT PAINT PUZZLES

Is there a Burlington VT pickup option this year?

Yes. Local Burlington paint puzzle lovers can pick up their orders on Saturday, December 23rd at SoapBox Arts (same location as last year). Please select “Pickup” at checkout. You will be sent a reminder email closer to the 23rd.

How do you save on shipping?

You can save on shipping by purchasing multiple puzzles packaged and shipped in a single box. Our Creatures - Two Puzzles, One Box allows you to select two puzzles packaged and shipped in a single box.

Is paint included?

Paint is not included in any of our Paint Puzzle Mural Packs. You may add paint as an “add on” in our store. Add on paint includes 12 colors in 12ml tubes. Please note that if you purchase the Figures Complete Collection, paint can be added to the inside of the box. However, for our Two In One Creatures Paint Puzzle Mural Packs, paint will be packaged outside of the box.

What is your instagram?

This year we will offer discount codes and “free shipping” opportunities which will be announced on our instagram @paint_puzzles, follow us to take advantage of these opportunities and for the most up-to-date news!

How difficult are Paint Puzzles to assemble?

We have designed various Paint Puzzles to meet a range of levels. They are our best guestimations. We take the number of pieces and the size of pieces into account when giving each puzzle a difficulty rating. Our most simple Creatures Paint Puzzle is our Butterfly. Our most accessible Figures Paint Puzzle is Figure #1. They have the fewest and largest pieces in their respective series. Please note that we recommend adult collaboration for children under 12. Puzzles pose a choking hazard to younger children.

Things to keep in mind: Paint Puzzles are not your average puzzle. The pieces do not interlock. Original Mary Lacy designs are instead made up of geometric shapes that lie side-by-side for an elegant design, and are inspired by her math murals, and mosaic work.

How do you install Paint Puzzles?

We like tac (it’s renter friendly) for wall installation. Each box, regardless of your selection, includes enough tac for installation. A little goes a long way — on average, a pea-size dot is enough for each shape. If you want to move the puzzle around with ease, adhere pieces to a wooden panel, poster board, mat board, or something similar.

Can you install Paint Puzzles outdoors?

Yes! We love the outside installations. There are a few important steps to take if you want to install these outside. Nothing will last forever, but it’s possible to get a few years out of them if you are intentional about your process.

First, it’s important to use exterior house paint. We recommend Benjamin Moore or Nova Color (online). Hot tip: many paint stores have a “seconds” bin where they sell mistints or dented cans etc. Check to see if the paint you are using has primer built in. If it does not, you will need to prime the shapes first.

Second, we recommend using wood glue to adhere each shape to a piece of plywood backing. You can cut the plywood out to the shape of the puzzle or leave it square and paint a scene as a background (flowers for the bee? grass surrounding the coneflower?). Having a plywood backing will give the installation a lot more durability.

Lastly, we highly recommend a top coat. There are many options here and feel free to ask for recommendations at the paint store. Two products that Mary recommends are Old Masters Water-based Polyurethane or the Varnish products from Nova Color.

What is the best way to design your Paint Puzzle?

There is no one right way! Each puzzle box includes a brochure with our design tips and recommendations. It even includes an example puzzle with insight into how Mary approached the design. Each puzzle box also includes reference guides that offer you a space to practice your design.

The two most important things to remember when creating your Paint Puzzle are:

  1. you can always begin again

  2. art invites experimentation and rule breaking :)
